What is Herpes?
Herpes is a common, recurrent infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), of which there are two subtypes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a virus
called Herpes Simplex. It's passed from person to person by contact with
infected skin. You can get herpes by kissing someone who has an oral
(mouth) infection (HSV-1), by having oral sex with someone who is
exposed, or by any skin-to-skin contact involving an exposed area. You
can also get genital herpes (HSV-2) by having unprotected sex with
someone who has it.
Herpes is a virus that unfortunately shows no visible symptoms in most
cases. The result is that because most people are not even aware they
have either Genital or Oral herpes they usually end up passing the virus
more frequently than people who know that they already have it. Once an
individual is exposed to the herpes virus and has it in their system, he
or she carries the virus in his or her body for the rest of their life.
